The Only Program that Improves Playing Conditions While Reducing Chemical, Fertilizer and Water Usage

Greenway Golf Affiliate Management Programs

Developed to address the specific needs of the various species of turf grass for every conceivable climatic condition, Greenway Golf’s Turf Management Program is the only program in the US to lower chemical and water usage while significantly improving playing conditions.

To achieve these enviable results, the Greenway Turf Management Program is based on several principles that ensure the correct nutritional, cultural and water management practices best suit the individual species of turf grass being maintained.

Sustainable Bent Grass Greens Management

Where cool season grasses can be maintained for use on greens, Greenway recommends the use of Bent grasses for the putting surfaces. Water is becoming more limited and in many cases the quality of water is deteriorating. Bent grasses are more tolerant to poor water quality than annual Blue grass (poa annua) and also require less chemical inputs that can translate into significant savings.

Bent grasses also have greater environmental benefits while reducing the chemical exposure to the maintenance staff and golfers due to the reduced amount of pesticides required to maintain superior quality.

Greenway’s maintenance program recognizes that Bent grasses are “acid loving” plants like azaleas and blueberries. Greenway has also developed maintenance programs that minimize surface disruption. Since Bent grasses are naturally slow growing, excessive or ill-timed verti-cutting, core aerification and other surface preparations can allow annual blue grass to invade into Bent grass greens. Utilizing Greenway’s Turf Management Program, courses are able to sustain Bent grass greens and eliminate poa contamination.

The Process for Improving the Putting Surfaces Back to Bent grass

Greenway has been highly successful in improving the putting surfaces back to Bent grass through the use of custom nutrients, amendments and maintenance procedures. This can be done in a very slow and controlled manner with virtually no impact to the surface quality.

Usually within two to three years, Greenway can successfully improve greens that are predominately Annual blue grass to predominately Bent grass. Noticeable improvements will be realized within a few months and continue monthly thereafter.

Bent grass provides clubs with significant cost savings and superior playing surfaces. At courses maintained by Greenway we have successfully eliminated or greatly reduced the need to apply fungicides to the greens. The process has been well received by the players of these clubs and they have only noticed the greens are smoother, firmer and more enjoyable to play on.

The “Science” Behind The Turf Management Program

Greenway bases its Turf Management Program on research and nearly three decades of field application. For instance, Greenway uses proven principles that have been well documented at universities such as Washington State and Bingley Turf Research Institute in the UK, and in books such as Practical Greenkeeping by Jim Arthur.

In addition, Greenway’s in-house agronomist Marc Logan applies his extensive horticulture knowledge and decades of hands-on experience gained from working with some of the world’s finest golf courses, including the Royal Melbourne and Mt. Lawley Golf Clubs in Australia.

How Greenway applies its Turf Management Program to your course depends on your property’s root zone material, climatic conditions and growth variations within the varieties of turf grass being maintained.

Firmer, Smoother and Faster Greens

Golf courses on the Greenway program realize a number of benefits within a few months. Once a cutting base has been established, putting surfaces can be mowed at extremely low cutting heights without adverse affects.

And, once optimal growth rates have been achieved at the crown, verti-cutting, double cutting and daily mowing are no longer necessary. The result is firmer, smoother, and faster greens.
