Recommended Turf Books

Greenway recommends the following books to Superintendents and Club Owners / Managers who would like to learn more about turf and the horticultural ideas upon which our program is based.

Practical Greenkeeping by Jim Arthur

Jim Arthur argues that golf courses can flourish by following traditional methods that are the most simple and most effective, both in terms of condition and cost. First written in 1997 and then updated in 2003, Practical Greenkeeping will help new generations of students and trainee greenkeepers while also providing encouragement for experienced course managers.

Greenkeeping in South Africa by Dr. C.M. Murray, DSO

Long out of print, this book, written in 1932, is a treatise on scientific methods for the establishment and maintenance of turf for sporting purposes and garden lawns. If you find a copy, buy it.

Turf for Golf Courses by Charles V.and Oakley and Russell Piper

Another out of print book that first laid out the some of the environmental principals practiced by Greenway.

The Complete Golf Course Turf & Design by Claude Crockford

A champion of the environment, Crockford limited his book to just 1000 copies, hence this book is very hard to find but well worth the read. (You can find a copy at the National Library of Australia and two signed copies on Amazon.)
